There are two different types of electrode, the flame sensing electrodes and the ignition electrodes. The ignition electrode creates a spark that begins combustion. The flame sensing electrodes are responsible for detecting whether there is a flame in the burner, this is important as if the flame is not burning correctly or not at all then no more fuel will be added .
