The secondary heat exchanger is only found in combi boilers and is sometimes referred to as the hot water heat exchanger or plate heat exchanger. The primary heat exchanger is used for transferring heat from the burner to the water in the system. The secondary heat exchanger allows heat to be transferred between two closed systems .
